Cornerstone's Day of the Defensemen
In a late afternoon game, Cornerstone traveled to Drayton. Both teams came out to conquer the ice pad. Drayton came out strong, initially making it difficult for Cornerstone to get around their defenses. But with two minutes left in the first period and some fancy maneuvering, Connor Johnson was able to send Cornerstone's first goal home. Leaving the Cornerstone team with a one, nothing lead heading into the second period.
During the second and third period the hard working Cornerstone defense came alive in a big way. Five minutes into the second period, MacKenzie McTeer, skated end to end, to meet with the Drayton goalie all alone. With a beautiful shot into the top shelf, the second goal of the game was entered for Walkerton. Then later in the second period, MacKenzie came out of no where with his second drive to the net, resulting in his second goal of the night. Our third period was the topping of the cake. It truly was a banner night for our defensemen. Only three minutes into the third period, Connor Johnson found the puck and passed it to an open Curtis Al. Curtis Al saw his opening and drove to the net. With a well executed shot at the net, his shot sailed pasted the goalie giving Cornerstone their fourth goal.
Drayton continued to press Cornerstone, they drove to the net themselves a number of times but Cornerstone defense was there to greet them, by taking the puck and rushing back into the other end. During one of the occasions we rushed to the Drayton net, Gordon McKee was there at the right time. Gordon lifted the puck and pushed it past the goalie resulting in his first goal and Cornerstone's fifth goal. Cornerstone was not done quite yet. Quick on the draw, Austin Kelly won the puck. He pressed past the opposition and made his way to the Drayton net, he shot but the puck did not reach the goal. With hard work Sam Byers slapped the puck towards the goal, again resulting in no goal but Austin was not done yet. He came in and lifted the puck into the Drayton net, giving Walkerton their sixth goal.
With 50 seconds left in the final period, MacKenzie McTeer worked for the puck and drove past the Drayton forwards then their defense. He skated alone to the net and lifted it into the air, the puck hit the back of the net, giving MaCkenzie his first hat trick of the season. We want to congratulate Gordon McKee on his first goal of the season and MacKenzie McTeer for his first hat trick of the season. Great work on yet another win!!
