Game 9 vs. Saugeen Shores Storm #2
The Walkerton Capitals returned to the ice just over 12
hours after their first lose of the season to face the Saugeen Shores Storm #2
on Sunday, November 12, 2017. The game
would feature end to end rushes and some outstanding plays from both teams.
The Capitals would apply pressure on the Storm goalie right from the opening face off. The young net-minder would make several excellent saves early in the game before Kyle Romphf opened the scoring after a goal mouth scramble 3:15 seconds into the period. Assists were awarded to Cobi Johnson and Colby Schmidt. Walkerton would lead 1-0 after the first period.
Walkerton would come out quickly to start the second when just over 21 seconds into the frame Cobi Johnson would send a precision pass to a streaking Kyle Romphf who released a high wrist shot that beat the goalie high stick side. The same combination would team up again four minutes into the period as Kyle completed the hat trick while on the power play. The two teams would battle back and forth as the period continued. Just after the half way point Walkerton would tally a fourth goal Cobi Johnson sent a pass from behind the net back to the blue line where Matthew McNaughton would fire on net and Colby Schmidt would tuck a rebound past the Saugeen Shores net-minder. The Storm offence would make several strong rushes into the Walkerton zone but the Capitals, Ryan Hinsperger would make several key saves. With just over a minute remaining a Storm forward would lift the puck over the Walkerton goalie who had attempted to make a poke check. The Capitals would lead 4-1 after two periods of play.
The third period again would see the two teams battle back and forth. A lot of the play would take place between two blue lines in the neutral zone. Just over 5 minutes into the period Cobi Johnson would score on a wrist shot just under the cross bar, assisted by Kyle Romphf. Nine seconds later Tyler Wallace would take the puck from the face off and break in and deke the Storm goalie. The Capitals would then score its second power play of the game with 3:15 remaining when Colby Schmidt scored his second of the game, assisted by Cobi Johnson and Kyle Romphf. The scoring would wrap up with Scott McTeer sliding the puck past the Storm goalie, assists were credited to Tyler Wallace and Kyle Romphf.
The boys played a very strong game from start to finish. The puck control and possession was fantastic. The defense core kept the puck in the Saugeen end by great work along the blue line. The forwards were moving the puck with passing and great precision and once again the goal tending was outstanding.
