Game 8 vs. Hanover Falcons #1
The Walkerton Capitals would make the short trip across
Highway #4 to play the Falcons #1 in Hanover on Saturday, November 11th,
2017. The game would be another low
scoring high energy tilt between the two opponents.
The two teams would start off cautiously. Neither wanting to make a mistake that might result in a scoring opportunity. As the first period continued the pace of the game opened up and each team would make end to end rushes. Each goaltender would be called upon to make several excellent saves to keep the game a scoreless draw after one.
The second period started with a flurry of activity. Hanover would open the scoring just before the one and half minute into the period when a goal mouth scramble had a loose puck beat Walkerton’s goalie. Walkerton would respond quickly with a goal of its own less than two minutes later when Cobi Johnson slid the puck into the Hanover net, assisted by Colby Schmidt and Kyle Romphf. As the period went on the Capitals would find themselves in penalty troubles including having to kill off a Hanover two man advantage. The period would end with the teams knotted at one a piece.
The third period would again start with the Falcons pressuring Walkerton in its own end. Hanover would score just before the two minute mark to take a 2-1 lead. Walkerton would turn up the heat on the Falcon’s net but were unable to score. The parade to the penalty box would continue and again the Capitals would kill off three penalties in the final six minutes including another brief two man short handed stint. The Capitals undefeated streak would come to an end with a 2-1 lose. The boys played hard throughout the game, the penalty killing was great and the back checking helped to keep the Hanover scoring chances to a minimum.
