Walkerton’s Prestige boys met a serious Lucknow team in their first game at the Hanover Pee Wee tournament on Saturday, January 21.
Lucknow definitely came to play, winning the game 3-1,
giving Walkerton a run for their money. Walkerton’s only goal was scored by
Brett Wagner on a breakaway, assisted by Christian Kieffer. Walkerton found
themselves in defense mode for most of the game, and goalie Calder Davidson was
put to the test time and time again. Prestige pulled their goalie in the final
minute of action, but to no avail.
Losing this first game put Walkerton into the consolation
side where they met up with a Wingham team. Walkerton came to this game with a
different outlook, resulting in a 4-1 win. Austin Kelly got a hat trick,
starting with an unassisted goal, followed by a two-man rush, and ending with a
wrap around the net effort. Jordan Bester rounded out the scoring, assisted by
Kelly and Cody Jones, assuring Walkerton the win.
Wingham wasn’t about to give up however, and despite a final
break away attempt, Davidson stopped the opposing team from putting another
marker on the board.
This led Walkerton to the B consolation final against the
Walkerton Webers Electric team. It was
home team against home team, and the first period ended 0-0. Prestige appeared
to be giving a repeat performance of their first game of the day, when just a
minute into the second period and down a man, Weber’s scored off a face-off in
Prestige’s end.
Prestige was able to end the second period tied 1-1 on a
goal by Noah Currie, assisted by Calvin Wilson.
At the start of the third, Prestige found themselves down
two men. With the puck in Prestige’s end for most of the time, it didn’t take
long for Webers to regain the lead. Prestige’s Chase Walker Hauck, assisted by
Wilson, responded with a goal to even the score. After Webers called a time out
with 1:19 left in the game, neither team could clinch the win before the final
buzzer.
Fans nerves were put to the test when a shoot-out to
determine the winning team went to seven shooters. At their sixth attempt,
Webers got one past Davidson, but Prestige’s Brett Wagner was able to match the
goal. The game was won when Webers scored again and Prestige couldn’t respond
with a goal of their own.
The entire Prestige team, including Davidson, Wilson, Jones,
Kelly, Bester, Kieffer, Wagner, Currie, Walker Hauck, Michaell Fortney, Ty
Arnold, Colton Rutledge and Ethan Schmidt, are to be congratulated on a good sportsmanship
and hard work.
PRESTIGE VS MILDMAY
SUNDAY, JANUARY 22
Back in regular league action on home ice, Prestige was able
to keep the game really close against an undefeated Mildmay team.
Mildmay opened the game with a quick goal in the first
minute of action, but Walkerton wasn’t able to light up the board until the
second period on a goal by Kieffer, assisted by Brett Wagner and Jayden
Louther. Colton Rutledge, assisted by Kelly, saw Walkerton leave the second
behind 3-2.
Davidson faced many shots throughout the game, but was
pulled in the final minute of the game to try and tie it up. Mildmay missed
their first two efforts at putting the puck in the empty net, but didn’t miss
the third time. The game ended 4-2 in favour of the visitors.
