Walkerton travelled to Hanover to play the Falcons#2 team on Saturday, January 9th in a highly anticipated game. As it turned out it was a very close and hard fought game that was the first in a home and home series.

The Capitals took early control of the game and pressured the Falcons net-minder with shots from both the point and from in close. The young net-minder made some big saves to keep his Falcon team mates in the game. Liam Osborne opened the scoring at 5:17 when his wrist shot beat the glove of the Falcons goalie, assisting was Emma O’Hagan. Just over a minute later Cobi Johnson was rewarded when his shot deflected off a Hanover defender and slid into the open side of the net. Walkerton continued to play hard for the remainder of the period and as the buzzer sounded lead 2-0 after 1

 

The second period had Hanover taking control and firing from all over the ice. Teghan Kauk made some impressive saves and was able to control rebounds and thus slow the tempo of play. Hanover scored while on the power play to cut the lead in half, and continued to pressure Walkerton. The perseverance paid off when a wrist shot beat Teghan stick side with 34 seconds remaining in the period. The period ended with the two teams tied at 2.

 

The third period started with Walkerton controlling the play and tempo by going back to it’s passing game which has been so successful this year. Liam Osborne scored his second goal of the night  after taking a pass from Cole Saunders to once again restore the lead for the Capitals. The Capitals continued to create a number of scoring opportunities during the period  achieved by aggressive fore checking and supported by our blue liners that held the zone and limited Hanover shots on our net. The two teams will face each other again on Tuesday , this time in Walkerton.
