Playoff Game 5 - Minto Mad Dogs 2
The Walkerton Capitals played host to the Minto Mad Dogs #2 team on Saturday, March 5.  The team had some sick and injured players in its line up, but the team would have to pull together for a win.

Walkerton opened the scoring early in the first period when Riley Harris slid a hard shot along the ice and in off the inside of the post at 2:20, assisting on the goal was Tyler Wallace.  The two teams would each have several rushes into each other’s zone and scoring chances were available but strong defensive coverage helped the goalies and as the period ended, Walkerton lead 1-0.

The second started and Walkerton started with a lot of speed and pressure.  They were rewarded at 1:04 when Liam Osborne fired a wrist shot past the Minto net-minder, assists were credited to Cole Saunders and Jack Walter.

The Capitals would continue to fire on the Minto net only to have pucks hit the post on two occasions.  Minto would make a few late rushes but Walkerton’s Teghan Kauk covered up giving very little in the way of rebounds. As the buzzer sounded Walkerton held a 2-0 lead.

The third period started with Minto continuing to pressure the Walkerton net.  Walkerton would take a hooking penalty and the Minto Mad Dogs would score shortly after when a deflected shot beat the Walkerton goalie over the shoulder to cut the lead to 1.  Minto would continue to pressure and would tie the game just over a minute later when a wrist shot found the open side of he net.  Scoring 2 goals in the first 3 minutes Minto continued to pressure Walkerton and again the Capitals would run into penalty troubles, but with 2 minutes in the box the team cleared the puck several times, sending Minto back to regroup.  Cole Saunders scored after taking a pass from Liam Osborne to take the lead back with just over three and a half minutes remaining.  Minto and Walkerton would each continue to pressure but strong goaltending from each side kept the game close with time wounding down Walkerton again would make the trip to the penalty box, but again Walkerton would fire the puck from their zone to preserve the victory.

The Capitals continue to play well as a team, the passing was again a big part of the game, and solid defensive play and using long break out plays were evident throughout the game.  The Capitals will play next on Tuesday evening in the final game of the year.
