Larsen Bantam Girls Win Silver
The Larsen Bantam Girls travelled to Orillia for the weekend to bring home their second silver medal in tournament play this year. The girls came up short in their final game to a strong Clarence-Rockland team. The girls performed well despite a short bench and injuries.
The girls started their first game against Waterloo. They scored early in the game and played great defense to hold off Waterloo for a 1-0 victory. The lone goal of the game was scored by Ashton Nixon assisted by Emalee Haight and Missy Adams. Alyssa Inglis played a strong game in net to preserve the shut out. Alyssa also earned the MVP honours for the game.
After a long wait in between games, the girls were set to tackle a strong Ennismore team. Hard work paid off for the girls as they swarmed the net and produced many scoring chances. After the final buzzer, the final score was 3-0 for the Walkerton side. Missy Adams had two goals and Ashton Nixon added a single marker. Assists for the game went to Destiny Berberich and Sarah Biesenthal.
Walkerton than faced Clarence-Rockland for a late game. The girls skated hard and it was a evenly fought match. Walkerton started off the scoring with two goals from Ashton Nixon assisted by Missy Adams, Jenah Van Loon and Katrina Young. Despite keeping their hard work, Clarence-Rockland scored two goals to end the game in a 2-2 tie. Ashton Nixon received the MVP award for her efforts.
The girls ended up in the finals to face off against Clarence-Rockland for a rematch. The Walkerton offence was slowed this game as they were killing off penalties and the Clarence-Rockland team made many good defensive plays. Micaela Stutzki played well in net. The Walkerton girls lost the game 2-0 thus taking home the silver medal. Katrina Young earned MVP honours for the final game.
All of the girls worked hard throughout the tournament. Both goalies were solid between the pipes all tournament. The forwards hustled and forechecked and provided many scoring chances. The defensive core of Lauren McLean, Katrina Wyatt and Jamie Van Loon kept the other team away from the goalies and started up many scoring chances. A special thank-you the Jenah Van Loon for helping out the team this weekend as she kept up with the strong forechecking of her teammates.
