The Walkerton Capitals would be back on the ice as they
played host to the visiting Kincardine Kinucks (Scotia Bank) on March 5,
2024. While still early in the playoffs,
teams are fighting for points and this game would be no different.
Kincardine would open the scoring just twelves seconds into
the game when they jumped on a rebound and fired the puck into the back of the
Walkerton net. The Capitals would score
a few minutes later when Marshall Odell scored on the wrap around from behind
the net. Assists were awarded to Spencer
Odell and Duncan Abell. Kincardine would
rally and score just thirty seconds later to restore its lead after a two on
one break and quick shot found the top corner.
The Kinucks would then score on a delayed penalty after the Capitals were
unable to touch the puck and get a whistle.
Walkerton would have an extended five on three powerplay late in the
period but would be unable to narrow the Kincardine lead of 3-1 after the first
fifteen minutes.
The second period and it would be non-stop action. The Capitals would score with just over nine
minutes remaining when Marshall Odell lifted a loose rebound into the top of
the Kincardine net. Spencer Odell would
pick up the assist on the play. That
would be the only goal scored by either team in the period. As the period ended Kincardine would hold a
3-2 lead but the Walkerton Capitals seemed to be getting momentum.
The Capitals would score two and a half minutes into the
third period when Spencer Odell finished off a fantastic three way passing play,
Chase Kaufman and Duncan Abell would get the helpers on the goal. Kincardine would again score just thirty
seconds later to take the lead.
Walkerton would again tie the game when Spencer Odell got his second
goal of the game after skating from his own end after picking up the puck from
the goalie, skating down the boards and cutting to the front of the net before
sliding the puck under the Kincardine netminder to again knot the game. Owen Waddell would be credited with an
assist. The Capitals would press and
control the play for much of the later stages of the period but would be unable
to get that elusive goal. With time
ticking away Kincardine would score with just under a minute and a half
remaining on a delayed penalty call. Walkerton would make a last ditch attempt to
again pull even but with the final buzzer it would be Kincardine who would come
away with the victory.
Another solid game in the books, but this time the boys would
come up just short. The two teams will
again face off each other later in the week and Walkerton will be able to build
on its positives from this game and will need to collectively work as a team as
the two points up for grabs will be that much more important now.
