The Walkerton Capitals would host the Huron-Bruce Blizzard
Grey on Saturday, February 26, 2024 for its second playoff game. The game would feature some outstanding
goals, amazing saves and fantastic action to keep those in attendance on the
edge of their seats.
The Capitals would open the scoring just two and a half minutes
into the game when Luka Abell fired a slap shot from the top of the faceoff
circle that found the top corner of the net.
Walkerton would add to its lead when Spencer Odell’s shot from the side
of the net although partially stopped by the goalkeeper still had enough power
to find the back of the net. Curtis Rowe
would pick up the assist on the goal.
The Blizzard would score when a player scored on a break away to cut the
Walkerton lead in half. Walkerton would
restore its 2 goal lead with time winding down when Travis Goll lifted the puck
into the top of the net with a backhand shot while on a partial breakaway with twenty-six
seconds remaining. The Walkerton
Capitals would hold a 3-1 lead after the first period.
The second period would see the two teams battle back and
forth, each side moving the puck with precision and skill. The period would see no scoring but only
because the outstanding play of the two netminders, both goalies made several
key saves throughout the period.
Huron-Bruce would come out quickly to start the third period
and would score in the opening minutes to once again pull themselves within a
goal. The Capitals would respond less
than a minute later when Spencer Odell picked up his second goal of the game
after his shot from the slot area beat the glove hand of the Blizzard
netminder. The assist on the play was
awarded to Curtis Rowe. Huron-Bruce
refused to sit back and would once again score to pull the Blizzard within a
single goal with less than three minutes to go. The team would pull its
goalie with time winding down for an extra skater and would tie the game with
just 11.8 seconds remaining after a clearing attempt was stopped at the
blueline and fired in and slid past the Walkerton goalie.
The second game in a row would see the Walkerton Capitals
head off to overtime. Walkerton would control
much of the play in the overtime period and just before the 3 minutes mark Luka
Abell shot from the point would beat the Huron-Bruce netminder for his second goal
of the team and bring his teammates over the boards in celebration.
Walkerton would win the game once again in overtime and pick
up a valuable 2 points. A great team effort
with all the boys skating well, chasing pucks and not giving up on loose
pucks. Owen Wadell was solid in the net
between the pipes and when push came to shove the team never collapsed in front
of him.
