The Walkerton Capitals would play host to the visiting
Saugeen Shores Storm on February 13, 2024.
The game would be the final regular season game of the year.
The first period would see both teams start at a somewhat slower
pace and continue with a lot of the play being conducted in the neutral
zone. The Storm would open the scoring
with 4:34 remaining in the opening period, and then score again less than a
minute later. Saugeen Shores would lead
2-0 after the first period.
The second period and the two teams would battle with a lot
of the play in between the bluelines.
The Storm would score in the opening few minutes to increase its lead. The Capitals would have chances but would be
unable to capitalize on its opportunities.
Saugeen Shores would take a commanding 3-0 lead into the third
period.
There would be no scoring in the final period but again not
for a lack of trying, the Capitals would fall 3-0 to the Storm. Even with the loss the Capitals would clinch
first place in the North Division.
Walkerton while they played hard at times it was not the same intensity
that they have played with for most of the season. Several times the puck beat the Storm netminder
but couldn’t beat the iron behind the goalie ringing off the post twice and the
crossbar. The biggest downfall was the
lack of passing which for most of the game was absent with players out front
but the puck carrier shooting from bad angles and thus wasted opportunities. The playoffs are just around the corner lets
hope the boys remember that it is a team game and the team concept is what put
them at the top of the standings in the first place.
