The Walkerton Capitals U18 LL team would open its 2023-24
season with a trip to Tiverton to play the Kincardine Kinucks (Scotiabank 2).
Walkerton would open the scoring four and a half minutes into the first period when Travis Goll fired a wrist shot passed the Kincardine netminder and off the post to find the back of the net. Assists were credited to Keegan Batte and Spencer Odell. The Capitals would increase their lead a minute and a half later when Chase Kaufman scored unassisted.
The second period would start with the Capitals continuing to crash the net and would be rewarded when Colby Schmidt fired a wrist shot from the slot area that would put the Capitals up 3-0 while on the power play. Kincardine would score midway through the second period while on the man advantage to cut into the Walkerton lead. Before the period ended Spencer Odell would restore the 3 goal lead after finishing a nice passing play, Travis Goll was awarded an assist on the play.
The final period would see the end to end play continue. Kincardine would score just over midway through the period to again cut into the lead but Walkerton’s goalie Owen Waddell would make some key saves down the stretch allowing nothing passed him to preserve the win.
A strong start to the regular season with solid play from the team. The boys played hard and were rewarded with an early season win. Both teams were strong in the corners and along the blue line but some outstanding saves from the goaltenders kept the game closer than the score might indicate.
