A battle of the two Walkerton teams would be
played December 18, 2016. The Sunday
morning game would be a back and forth tilt with the two sides each fighting
for home town bragging rights.
The first period and each team would test the others goalie often, but both goaltenders were up to the challenge. Talon Hope made several key saves late in the period to keep the game scoreless.
The second period and the Capitals #2 came out quickly. Jack Walter would score just before the 3 minute mark of the period when he bounced on a juicy rebound and fired a hard wrist shot over the fallen net-minder. Carson Baglole would then score with 4:14 left in the period after he made a rush from his own end and put a wrist shot top corner over the goalie’s glove. Walkerton #2 would lead 2-0 after 20 minutes.
The third period had the two sides continuing the battle with end to end rushes and sustained pressure. The Capitals #2 team would score with 6:33 remaining when Travis Goll would assist Colby Schmidt on a shot that found the back of the net. The #2 Capitals would then need to kill off a penalty with just over 2 minutes remaining. The defence was able to control the puck and send it down the ice and out of harms way.
Another strong performance by the team, the passing game was top notch and solid defensive play were keys to a successful end.
