The Walkerton Capitals Atom LL2 team played its first game
of the 2016-2017 season on Monday, October 17th with an away game against the Howick Hornets.
The Capitals came out quickly and were rewarded when a Howick defender attempted to fire around the net and took a strange bounce in past the goalkeeper, Jack Walter was credited with the goal. Walkerton continued to pressure and Jack Walter tallied a goal just over 2 minutes later after taking a pass from Carson Baglole. The scoring continued 45 seconds later when Travis Goll unleashed a wrist shot that beat the goalie glove side. Wes Hunt scored late in the period after taking a pass from Jack Walter. The Capitals lead 4-0 after the first period.
The second period and the Howick Hornets came out with an extra jump in their game. Howick scored after a goal mouth scramble a minute and thirty seconds into the period. The Capitals would restore the 4 goal lead when Carson Baglole sent a pass to Travis Goll and he found the back of he net just over half way through the period. Howick added a late goal with 1 minute remaining. The two teams were back and forth throughout the period each team testing the others goalie. Walkerton lead 5-2 at the end of two.
The two teams continued the sea saw battle throughout the third. Howick continued to pressure but Talan Hope in the Capital net made some strong saves. Walkerton was able to kill a 2 minute penalty mid way through the period and kept the Hornets to a single shot while short handed. Howick scored with just under 5 minute remaining to cut into the Walkerton lead. Neither team was able to muster a sustained attack as the last few minutes of play were contested in a neutral zone, thanks in part to strong defence that allowed no shots on net. The Capitals would mount a final offensive attack and were rewarded when Colby Schmidt scored with one second remaining in the game.
The first game of the year and the Capitals doubled the Howick Hornets 6-3. A good showing by the Capitals and while we will need to work a little more on positioning and our passing game the coaches were pleased with the play of the young Capitals players.
