Above 500 Finish and Consolation Champions
Regular Season is now over after a great hockey game on Friday January 4th against Saugeen Shores. The next day we were in Harriston for a Tournament, so the Atom Reps had a busy weekend!!
In our last Regular Season game against Saugeen Shores it was a great back and forth game and many fans told me after the game it was a great game to watch. Suageen opened the score late in the first period on a power play goal and it remained tied unitl early in the third period. Both goaltenters played an excellent game making many great saves!! Aiden Hinsperger and Adam Girdler scored in the first 5 minutes on the third to give Walkerton the lead which we held until 4:38 of the third. We had played Saugeen Shores two weeks earlier and we had a 3 to 0 lead and gave up the tying goal with 15 seconds left and we did not want another tie game. With 52 seconds left Aiden took care of that with his second of the game and Walkerton held on for the win!!
Assists in the game went to Tyson Hinds, Tyler Folmer, Zach Saunders, Sky Berfelz and Riley Keip. Ryan Fotheringham played very well in net for the win!! We finished the Season 7 wins, 6 losses and 3 ties in a very tough division, I was very pround of the team!!
On Saturday morning at 8am we travelled to play in the one day tournament in Harriston with our first game against the hometown team Minto who is a very strong team! It was a back and forth game early on and was 3 to 2 for Minto going into the thrid. Minto scored two more to make it 5 to 2 with just over 6 minutes left in the game which appeared to be over, but Walkerton stormed back with 3 goals in just over 2 minutes to climb back into the game, it looked like overtime would be needed however Minto ended up with a 5 on 3 power play and took advantage to score the winner with 52 seconds left. I was very proud of the team in their comeback. Minto would go on to win the Championship.
In the second game played Dundalk and they gave us a good battle despite having only 8 skaters, and this was a goaltenders battle early on as both goalies made some unbelievable saves!! Ealry in the third it was 2 to 1 for Walkerton after Dundalk scored, however in 1 minute and 20 seconds after the Dundalk goal it was 5 to 1 for Walkerton with three very quick goals. The final ended up 5 to 2 after a late goal.
In the Consolation Championship we face Mt Forest who a month earlier handed us a 4 to 3 defeat keeping us from advancing to the semi finals at the Silver Stick so the team was hunger but tired too after a long day of hanging out in Harriston. The game was a goaltender battle again and the first goal was not scored until 5:43 on the second period for Walkerton. The team kept pressing and score 3 goals in the third to seal a 4 to 0 win and win the Consolation Championship!!
