Midget Girls Rep Lower Lakes Action
by Rick Rier

The ladies of this strong team have continued with their regular season winning ways for coaching staff Brian Busby, Doug Wright, Tom Kittel, Dennis Becker and trainers Bonnie Thompson and Cheryl Kuntz.

Oct 26, a home tilt against Chatham resulting in a 5-3 victory. After a scoreless first, the forward line of Joelle Busby, Leah Kittel, and Julie Thomson unleashed their fury in the second. Kittel from Thomson and defense Madison Wright notched the first one, and shortly after it was Busby from Thomson and defence Janelle Weber to make it 2-1 after two. The third period saw Chatham come out strong and tie it up just 45 seconds in on a nifty shot. That lit the fire that was needed and Thomson would find the back of the net from Busby and Weber. Less than a minute later, Kailee Liesemer would make it 4-2 with assists to Des Berberich and Wright again. Leah Kittel would score her second of the game after finishing off a play from Joelle Busby, giving the later three points in the game along with Julie Thomson. Another win for Cassidy Becker in the home team net.

The next day and a trip to London where, despite having ten penalties to London’s four, the Walkerton women would secure a solid 4-0 win. Julie Thomson would pick up where she left off scoring mid-way thru the second with Joelle Busby earning the loan assist. Into the third in this physical tilt, in which we did carry the majority of the play, Leah Kittel scores on a feed from Thomson. Then the defense would get in on the action as Janelle Weber, from Berberich and Liesemer to make it 3-0 before Melynda Mackenzie would score late in the game unassisted. Erica Parker would earn the shutout between the pipes.

The latest action on the road on Nov 9 with Brantford,  and another resounding tick in the win column 5-1. The girls carried the play for the majority of this game, jumping out to a 3-0 leading after the first. Julie Thomson would convert from Joelle Busby and Melynda MacKenzie. Then sixteen seconds and a line change later, Destiny Berberich from Rebecca Rier and “boom” just like that 2-0. Under a minute to go in period one, Busby is back on the score sheet with the helper to Janelle Weber. Brantford would press a little in the second, and manage to sneak one in before the third period would again be owned by the Walkerton Capital’s. Two unassisted tallies, first one to Jasmine Thompson and next up Weber lights the lamp.

The first week of November saw these ladies make the trip to Detroit for the Woman’s World Hockey Invites. A respectable record of 2W-1L-1T to be reported on in the next article
