Regular Season Winding Down
by Rick Rier

The Christmas break was anything but for this talented squad as a total of 8 games were played in a three week time span.

Regular season action saw a record of 1-0-2. A very solid team effort resulted in a 4-0 win over the home team of Belmont to kick-start the Christmas break. Cassidy (Carey Price) Becker earned the shutout making several key saves when needed. Her team mates carried the majority of play in this game as the score indicates.

The next day and off to Woodstock to face a team that earlier in December handed the Walkerton Capitals a 3-0 loss. This was Erica Parkers game as she stood tall in net, and assisted her team in earning a 1-1 tie. Walkerton scored in the first, but Woodstock kept coming and tied it up early in period two. A tense third, but neither goalie was giving an inch.

The 15th Annual Guelph Gryphons Girls tournament was next up January 3 to 5. Friday action and two games with the end result of outscoring their opponents 8 to 3. First was a tilt with Stoney Creek, and a 4-3 victory. This game wasn’t without excitement as with a minute remaining, the Kinettes with a commanding 4-1 lead, Stoney Creek netted two quick ones. However, the girls regained their composure and held on, as they should of as eight different players made the score sheet.Game two was against rival Owen Sound. A very solid performance by everyone with forechecking, backchecking, defense, and netminding (Erica Parker) and the end result a 4-0 win. Fourteen penalties were handed out in this game with action getting a little chippy between girls that know each other.Into Saturdays action and match vs the team from Oakville. These girls are a solid team and move the puck quickly, and have the speed as well. The end result was 3-1 loss for the Capitals, who played a penalty free game which is rare a midget level competition.Saturday evening and the home team of Guelph is the next competition. This was as good a hockey game to watch as there was with it taking the full three periods, then overtime, then a shoot-out to determine the winner. All three players scoring for the Kinettes and a 2-1 well deserved victory. Erica Parker appeared far less nervous than her father in backstopping the victory.Earning a spot in the semi-finals, and a match against league division rival Kitchener. The end result was a 4-1 loss. Kitchener has an aggressive fore-check and we were bottled up on too many occasions. Highly anticipating the re-match here as we meet Kitchener twice in league play in the next week.

Tournament complete and right back to regular season action against Saugeen Maitland. This is like watching the battle of Ontario as both these teams play each other like it’s for the Cup! Saugeen carried the play in the first, but Erica Parker made save after save after save. Late in the second we would find the back of the net, 1-0 after two. It wasn’t until the third, with as much traffic in front of Erica as the 401 has at 5pm, and Saugeen would manage to score two within a few minutes. Sensing the urgency, the Walkerton ladies showed their true grit and tied it up with just over two minutes to play. The end result, a 2-2 tie.
