Walkerton Girls Midget 'A'

The 2013/14 season is in full swing for this group of ladies, who are competing for the first time at the “A” level in the Lower Lakes Female Hockey League (LLFHL) To start the season strong, they comprised a record of 3 wins and a tie in exhibition play from September 22 – 29. Earning victories over South Huron, twice defeating West Huron, and a tie against Owen Sound.

October 5th started the regular season at home with a visit from London. Six times the Walkerton Capitals where shorthanded in this tilt, combined with the game being curfewed with two minutes remaining, resulting in a 5-4 loss. Just six seconds in, Leah Kittel gave the home team the lead unassisted. New to the midgets this year, Alexis Martin, would put the girls up 2-0 assisted by Madison Wright. London would manage one in the first to make it 2-1 after one. Again a quick start to the period would give Walkerton a 3-1 lead as Julie Thomson buries one from Joelle Busby. But the penalty parade would start with five to Walkerton and after two, game tied at three. The third would see London capatalize and take a 5-3 lead with just over six minutes remaining. Thomson would notch another, assists to Janelle Weber and Busby. Within one, and carrying the play, the game is called with approximately two minutes remaining. Cassidy Becker was the keeper of the twine and faced numerous scoring chances from London. The next day, the team travelled to Chatham to face the outlaws. This one was all Capitals as they shut the home team down 2-0. First time Walkerton net minder, Erica Parker, earned the shutout, with the entire team contributing a solid effort. Scoreless thru one, Joelle Busby would heat up her stick and bury her first with helpers to Julie Thomson and Jasmine Thompson. The game would get a little chippy in the later stages of the second and carry over into the third, with 16 penalties being handed out. Ms Busby, with Thomson and Alyssa Becker assisting, would again light the lamp, securing the first regular season victory The latest action saw the Bluewater Hawks make the trek up highway 4 and 9 for a Saturday evening tilt. An exciting game to watch, with several scoring chances for both teams. Cassidy Becker was on her game in net, coming up with several solid saves in the game. With just five seconds remaining in the second period, Leah Kittel would make a nice move in the high slot and fire one over the Bluewater goalie’s shoulder, 1-0 thru two. Another solid team effort in period three, every line contributing to several great scoring chances, and solid defensive play, the Capitals where again victorious, 1-0. The penalty killers where called into action in the last four minutes, but they stood their ground, and Ms Becker in net again made several great saves from in close. The next two Saturdays are home games, then Sunday the 26th a trip to London, before the team packs up and heads State side for tournament action in Detroit. An excellent opportunity for some team bonding, for both players and the parents.
