Bantam Girls Bring Home Silver in First Tournament
Written by Shannon Busby

The Walkerton Bantam Girls Rep team have taken on a new challenge this season. For the first time in history the Walkerton girls have opted out of the WOAA league to face more competition throughout the season. The Caps have now entered the Lower Lakes Female Hockey League which means facing teams from as far away as Sarnia.

Two teams have risen to this challenge, the Peewee and Bantam Girls Rep teams.
The Bantams recently brought home a silver medal from their first tournament in Mitchell at the end of October. The Caps first opponent was South Huron. Alyssa Inglis was solid in net which allowed her the shutout. Joelle Busby netted the first goal of the game in the 2nd period on a pass from Julie Thomson. Busby returned the favour in
the third as she assisted on a goal scored by Thomson to make a final score of 2-0 for Walkerton.
Game two saw the Caps dominate the squad from Goderich as the final scoreboard read 4-1 for Walkerton. The Caps defense played a large role in the game as Monica Fritz scored a goal and Alyssa Becker and Madison Wright had assists. Other goals were added by Busby, Thomson and Nicole Osborne with Thomson collecting 2 assists.
The third game saw Walkerton hand over a 6-1 loss to Guelph. The entire team wowed the coaches and fans alike as they made slick passing plays and controlled the entire three periods. Goals and assists were spread throughout the motivated team. Scoring were Leah Kittel (2), Thomson (2), Osborne and Shelby Fortney. Assists were collected by Kailee Liesemer (2), Destiny Berberich (2), Carlee Beitz, Faith Yensen, Emily Daurio, Becker, Thomson and Busby.
Three wins and no losses brought the hometown team to the finals to face their biggest rival, Kincardine. Walkerton fought hard and showed much determination. The end of the first period resulted in no score. Later in the second period, the Kincardine squad were able to capitalize on a man advantage to make the score 1-0. With two minutes left on the clock, the Caps pulled their goalie and pelted the defending goalie with many shots. Walkerton came close but could not tie the game. Final score 1-0 Kincardine and a silver medal for Walkerton. The Caps
goalie, Alyssa Inglis was awarded the game MVP. The coaching staff was very pleased with the level of play shown
by the girls and is excited about using the potential of this team! Way to go girls!
