Godfather PeeWee Girls Win International Silverstick!
 by Andy Cormack

The Godfather PeeWee girls travelled to Sarnia Feb. 5-7 for the International Silverstick Tournament and came home the champs. The girls went 5-0 to win the much coveted silver stick and banner.

The girls played South Huron in their first game and won 2-1 in a very close battle.  Jasmine Thompson opened the scoring for the Walkerton girls, with assists going to Madison Wright and Emily Cormack.  Julie Thomson scored the game winner, assisted by Joelle Busby.  Madison Wright was chosen MVP of the game.
In their second game, the girls played a team from Clearview and defeated them 3-1.  Busby lead the way with two goals.  Ashley Ernst got the third goal.  Assists were awarded to Ernst (2), Busby and Thomson. Julie Thomson was chosen MVP for this game.
In an epic quarter final game against Waterloo, the Walkerton girls prevailed in overtime, winning 2-1.  Thompson scored Walkerton's lone goal in regulation time, assisted by Cormack.  The overtime game winner was credited to Busby, assisted by Thompson.  Jasmine Thompson was chosen MVP for this game.
The girls played league rivals, Kincardine, in the semi final game.  Walkerton won a hard fought battle by a score of 3-2.  Goal scorers were Leah Kittel, Thomson and Busby.  Madison Wright, Natalie Hawkins and Thomson earned the assists.  Ashley Ernst was the MVP for this game.
The final game was truly an international affair which pitted the Walkerton girls against a team from Nashville, Tennessee.  Walkerton received stellar goaltending from Madison Elliott which helped preserve a 2-0 victory.  Thompson opened the scoring in the first period on an unassisted effort.  After a nailbiting, back and forth game, Thomson sealed the victory with an empty net goal with one minute remaining on the clock.  Julie Thomson was the MVP for this game.
This was a herculean victory as the girls played the weekend with ten players, as defenceman Melynda McKenzie had previously injured her wrist and was unable to play in the tournament.  In each game the girls demonstrated a tenacious effort and a will to win.  Monica Fritz was once again solid on the point and provided excellent defensive coverage.  While there were individual MVP awards given, each of the girls played remarkable hockey the whole weekend.  This is the third consecutive year that a Walkerton PeeWee team has won this tournament!
