Wightman’s Women Atoms dig deep and almost complete a big comeback.
Despite some good play by all the Wightman’s Local League Women’s Atoms, the team found itself down 6 to 1 by the end of the second period to the visiting team from Markdale.
Goaltender Vicky S must have talked to her defence and they determined that they would stop the almost unanswered scoring as the 2nd period ended, as they came out roaring in the 3rd. S. became a wall, making some great stops and Justine M on defense kept the puck out of Wightman’s end and played a great game with a particularly strong final period.
Getting the team motivated was Jenna F who netted a goal just as the 2nd period was ending. F. wasn’t done though, starting out the third with 2 more goals for the natural hat-trick. A minute later and F. fed the puck to Samantha H who showed her scoring touch by netting the 4th goal for Wightman’s.
Unfortunately though, Markdale hung on for dear life as Walkerton women peppered the net. While it wasn’t enough to avoid the loss, the grit these young ladies showed in powering back after being so far down leaves no doubt that the Wightman’s Women’s Atom team can never be counted out.
