The long trip to Honeywood did not seem to dampen the energy and high level of play for the Wigthtmans Atom Girls Local League team. With standout goaltending by Vicky S and a natural hat-trick by Samantha H, Wightmans came out of the first period with a 3-0 lead.
Honeywood tried to come back in the 2nd period with two quick goals. But they were quickly shut down by answering goals from Samantha H, Brina H and Stephanie Y.
Walkerton had to withstand a continued pounding on their net. Outstanding defence by Justine M, Lily H, Moira R and Emily E and continued strong goaltending by Vicky S helped withstand the pressure. Adding a much needed insurance goal was Jenna F.
In the end Walkerton withstood the drive to their net by Honeywood and left the ice with a sweet 7-5 win.
The tough loss for Wightmans was at the hands of the high powered Durham team. Walkerton seemed to have trouble with the hard-driving Durham team from the start, leaving goaltender Vicky S all alone to stop the Durham attack on a number of occasions. Throughout the game Walkerton battled hard, and showed some solid playing style, but could only manage a couple of goals by Samantha H, with Stephanie Y racking up two assists on the goals.
This was a tough 7-2 loss, but the girls learned that their key to future success will be making sure they play together as a team.
