Intermediate girls win gold at Provincials
The Walkerton Intermediate B girls team headed to Brampton for Ontario Provincials this weekend with 11 players. 8 am Friday morning the girls faced Ilderton. The Capitals scored first but with tournament jitters and penalties, the girls lost 3-2. Friday afternoon, Walkerton’s captain, Stephanie Doer found the net late in the first period against Napanee. Late in the third, she scored the winning goal defeating Napanee 2-1.
Saturday, Walkerton was down a player due to the flu. With 3 defense and 6 forwards, the Capitals played a disciplined game against Brookville. Jasmine Richardson scored late in the first period and with a minute and a half in OT, scored her 2nd goal of the game to give the Capitals the 3-2 win.
That afternoon, Walkerton faced Belmore in a fast-paced, end-to-end action packed semi-final game. Belmore scored their only goal late in the first period. The 9 players dug into their reserves and backed Belmore into their end finding the net with 4 goals.
Sunday, the Capitals took on Parkhill for gold. With 10 tired skaters, Walkerton played a cautious game. Colleen Parks’ goal late in the second period rallied the team but it was short-lived as Parkhill tied the game with 46 seconds left in the second. Goalie, Kayla D’Aoust kept the Capitals in the game in the third and saved the game against a 3-forward rush in OT. Captain, Stephanie Doer scored the game winner at 5.41 in OT.
