Midget Rep Girls Win Gold in Woodstock
The Walkerton Kinette Midget Rep girls travelled to Woodstock the week-end of Jan 7-9th and came home with a well deserved and hard earned championship.

The girls came into the tourney on a 9 game winning streak in WOAA league play, but knew the competition would be stiffer in this tourney.
They started their tournament off on Friday afternoon with Georgina Golden Hawks supplying the opposition. After fast back and forth 1st period, Walkerton’s captain, Becky Busby notched her 24th goal of the year, with a beautiful shot to the top corner late in the first. Lauren Smith and Shae Busby collected the assists. The Kinette girls made it 2-0 late in the second with Smith scoring on a set-up from Lauren McLean. Ashton Nixon sealed the victory in the third by scoring into an empty net to make the final 3-0. Katie Grubb earned the shutout.
Lambton Shores provided the next opposition late Friday night and proved to be all that Walkerton could handle. Becky Busby, again got Walkerton off on the right foot with a goal half way through the first. Jocelyn King earned the lone assist. Lambton Shores tied the game in the second and score remained tied 1-1 until late in the third when Becky put Walkerton ahead, with her typical never say die effort, and tapped in her own rebound. Smith and Katrina Wyatt earned assists and Grubb got the 2-1 win.
Saturday night was when the girls next game was scheduled and the Sarnia Sting were there waiting. Having played Sarnia in an earlier tournament, the Kinette girls knew they were in for a rough and tough match. After Sarnia hit two posts early in the first, Nixon scored her second of the tournament and 5th of the year, unassisted, with a laser shot to the top corner from just inside the blue line. Becky scored a power play goal 2 minutes later with assists from Smith and Alison Elphick, who made the trip dispite being bed ridden for 3 days prior to this game and the first period ended 2-0. Early in the second, Katrina Young scored on a beautiful wrap around move to make it 3-0. Missy Adams and Nixon assisted. The checking line of Christina Kaufman, Hayley Fischer and Claire Tomlinson frustrated the Sarnia forwards with their tenacious back checking and helped Grubb earn her second shut out of the tourney and 16th on the year with a 3-0 win.
The finals on Sunday pitted Walkerton against Sarnia again but this was a much different game. Playing on Olympic sized ice, Sarnia used their speed and rough play to try and intimidate Walkerton but the Kinette girls were having none of that and took it to the Sting girls. Back and forth action ensued and the score after regulation time was 0-0. An ailing Elphick needed some extra rest in the OT session, so a fired up Wyatt was summoned up from ‘D’ to fill in. Wyatt took a dirty shot to the back, late in the Saturday night game and had revenge on her mind. She easily played her best game of the year and was rewarded midway through the overtime when she banged in a Smith rebound after a faceoff win by Becky. This was Wyatt’s first goal in TWO years and she sure picked the right time for it!!! Grubb again was stellar earning the shutout and helping Walkerton to a 1-0 championship win.
