Kinette Midget Ladies Capture Two Series
written by Rick Rier

The Walkerton Kinette Midget Capitals continued their strong play thru February, winning the best of three series against both Woodstock, and Saugeen Maitland in two games straight.

A weekend home and home match up against Woodstock kicked off with a home victory for Walkerton 5-1. The line of Elyse Bridgwater, Ally Spielmacher, and Jasmine Thompson continued their strong play with 6 points between them, including two goals each for Elyse and Ally. Julie Thomson would add her own goal with assists to Gabby Jex and Leah Kittel. Game two in the series was a trip to Woodstock the next night, and the result a similar 4-1 victory. Ally Spielmacher and Gabby Jex would open the scoring, then Leah Kittel would net two of her own. Woodstock would manage one in the third to spoil the shutout.

So with that series complete, round two in the Lower Lakes Female Hockey League would see Walkerton vs Saugeen Maitland, a team that made the regular season match ups exciting to say the least. With that in mind, game one at home saw the girls primed and come out flying. Saugeen would get the first goal early into period two, but that was it as Walkerton would answer with eight of their own for the 8-1 final! Goal scorers where Elyse Bridgwater (3), Leah Kittel (2), with singles to Joelle Busby, Jasmine Thompson, and Gabby Jex. Earning the helpers were Julie Thomson (2), Gabby, Ally, Elyse, Jasmine, and Natalie Lupo-Flewelling. Over to Teeswater for game two in the best of three series and a similar result with Saugeen getting on the board first, but then our girls replying with five, final 5-1 and the girls advance to the third and final round of the playdowns, awaiting the winner of the Guelph vs Bluewater series. Five different ladies found the back of the net in this tilt, Mikayla Whitney, Gabby Jex, Julie Thomson, Leah Kittel, and Rebecca Rier. Earning assists were Julie Thomson (4)!, Ally Spielmacher (2), Leah, and Elyse Bridgwater.

Thru both series the goaltending tandem of Cassidy Becker and Erica Parker played exceptionally well, allowing no more than one goal a game!

In late January, early February, the girls travelled to Sarnia to participate in the International Silver Stick. Thru the round robin and semi finals, the girls dominated going 5 and 0, while outscoring their competition by a 16 to 3 margin. Earning themselves a date in the championship game, against who else but the team from Clearview (Alliston), whom they have met twice before in tournament championships with each team winning once. This time was the same outstanding hockey these two teams play, only one penalty aside, the final score being 2-1 in Clearview’s favour.
