Kincardine and Goderich Beached
The Walkerton Capitals (Kinettes) midget B girls hockey team ticked two more league games off from the schedule as they hosted Kincardine, January 8, and Goderich Sailorettes, January 11. Play was intense as both Kincardine and Goderich have recently been bumped up to B status and all three teams will likely meet up with each other again for Provincial playoffs.

Getting a quick jump in the Kincardine game, Lauren Bell and Katrina Grubb showed everyone that they ready to play with a goal at just over a minute into the game (Bell scored, Grubb assisted). Ice action was back and forth all game but Walkerton goalie Alanna Anstett kept her team in the game and the Capitals offence kept the attacks coming. The 1-0 score held until later in the second when Bell set up Becky Busby who slipped goal number two into the Kincardine net. Kincardine continued their fight but Walkerton prevailed and struck a total of three more times in the third period. Leading the charge was Grubb with two of the goals – one unassisted and the other with help from Bell and Jasmine Richardson. Chantale Bourque was the other scorer and she was able to accomplish the marker unassisted. Anstett held firm between the pipes all game and recorded the shutout.
In the second game of the weekend, the Capitals faced Goderich Sailorettes but the final 9-0 score wasn’t as clear sailing as it would imply. This fierce game involved lots of end-to-end traveling at quick speeds and more than its share of jostling in the corners. In a repeat of the previous game, Walkerton was able to light up the board right away but, always trying to better their performance, the girls were able to score within nine seconds of the start of the game. Grubb and Bell were in on things again, but this time the lead was given to Carolyn Hodgson with the 14:51 goal.
Grubb and Bell continued the onslaught and by the sound of the final buzzer Grubb had a goal to her credit and a total three assists while Bell snuck in two goals and a total of three assists. Another standout on the gamesheet was rookie Bourque with a goal and an impressive four assists to her credit and oldtimer Colleen Parks with two goals and an assist. Rounding out the scoring were Richelle Busby and Maria Kuntz with goals, and Rachael Diebold, Claire Ashton and Hodgson with an assist each. Once again, Anstett received plenty of action in the Walkerton end but refused entry to her domain for another shutout.
The scoresheets only deliver half of the story, however, and the rest of the Walkerton midget B team have to be congratulated for their incredible supporting roles of working hard and working together to cough up that puck – this team really is a treat to watch.
Coming up for the Walkerton Capitals (Kinettes) midget B girls’ hockey team will be an exciting weekend in Orangeville to participate in their annual tournament and, weather-willing, a league game versus Tiverton on the 14th. The last half of the season is ON folks and the countdown to bringing it all together for Provincial play is ticking. Grab your mittens and spend some time at your local rink while your local athletes fire things up!
