Midget Bs Bring Home Reeves Cup
After an uneventful holiday season rinkwise, the Walkerton Capitals (Kinettes) midget B girls’ hockey team were back at it December 27 in an exhibition showdown against Belmore intermediates and January 4 versus Mount Forest midgets.

The last game of the year for Walkerton was played on the Belmore ice surface and was a treat for all involved with a fast pace, quick maneuvers and snappy stick action. The intermediates cashed in on their experience against the young ‘uns not once but twice in the first period for an early 2-0 lead and the midgets had a hole to dig themselves out of. Slowly chipping away at the fierce Belmore defence, Walkerton was able to break onto the scoreboard at 13:15 in the second when Richelle Busby fed a pass to Collen Parks who bent the twine. In the final period, the Capitals once again hit the ice skating hard and were able to sneak another past the Belmore netminder. Scoring for Walkerton this time was Lauren Smith, assisted by Chantale Bourque.
The remaining 13 minutes weren’t enough for either team to rally again and the score remained tied until the final buzzer sounded.
January 4 the team traveled to Mount Forest to participate in the Reeves Challenge Cup, an annual match-up of Walkerton and Mount Forest teams. Doing their part, the midget girls were able to not only win one for Walkerton but also won both the skating and shooting skills competitions before the game. One-on-one heats saw both Walkerton skaters in the final laps where Holly Cameron was able to pass the finish line ahead of Bourque by a stride. Shooters for Walkerton were Katrina Grubb and Parks, and Parks’ sharp top corner shots proved to set her apart from the others.
Friendly skills competitions over, it was on to the start of the game and the Capitals continued to dominate snapping in three unanswered goals in the first period. First on the stats sheet this game was Grubb who tossed it in at 13:34. Assisting on the play were Lauren Bell and Janna Reading. Bell followed suit minutes later after accepting assistance from Maria Kuntz and Rachael Diebold. The final goal of the period was scored by Smith with assists going Bourque and Claire Ashton.
The Capitals continued tilting the ice in the second and at 13:44 defencemen Kascha Fischer and Jasmine Richardson tossed the puck up to Parks who sent it home. Mount Forest rallied back in the third period and scored their first goal at 9:16 dashing shutout hopes for Walkerton goalie Alanna Anstett. Not done yet, however, the blue and red did not let that throw them off their game and goals number five and six were scored before time was up. Scoring her second of the night was Grubb at 6:37, assisted by Bell and Reading. Becky Busby finished the scoring at 3:53 with help from Parks and R. Busby.
Thank you to Mount Forest and their many volunteers for another night of hockey camaraderie between our two centres.
