Jack Tolhurst Memorial Tournament Champions!
The Easthill Autohaus Walkerton Pee Wee Rep Capitals travelled to St. George and Brantford the weekend of Oct.20-22 to participate in the Jack Tolhurst Memorial Tournament. After three days and five games of great hockey, the Walkerton Capitals were named the Pee Wee Rep Division Champions!
The tournament started Friday morning with Walkerton facing the Belmont Rangers. The game was close right from the start, with Belmont utilizing their speed to set a fast pace to the game. Walkerton found their stride and eventually managed to best Belmont with a score of 3-1.
Friday's second game had Walkerton playing against the Hagersville Hawks. This was a very physical match with several power play opportunities for both teams. Things didn't look great for Walkerton when Hagersville took a 4-2 lead, but the boys pulled together and earned a hard fought 4-4 tie.
Saturday's lone game saw Walkerton playing the host St. George Generals. This game was all Walkerton. The team peppered the St. George goalie with over 40 shots in the game and skated away with a 5-1 win, securing first place in the A Division in the process.
Sunday morning brought a semi-final match-up against the second place team from the B Division, the South Kent Lightning. This was a tightly played game, but Walkerton managed to take control of the play and earned a 3-0 win. This win allowed Walkerton to advance to the Championship game later on that day.
Walkerton came up against a familiar opponent in the Final in the Belmont Rangers as Belmont defeated the Delhi Rockets in the second semi-final game. Belmont again tried to utilize their strong skating to their advantage, and jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. Walkerton quickly regrouped and tied the game at 1-1 before the end of the first period. As the game wore on, Walkerton began to take control of the game, sending many shots at the Belmont goaltender while limiting shots against. Walkerton added three more goals over the final two periods, earning a 4-1 victory and securing the tournament championship at the same time! The entire tournament saw a strong team effort, with Walkerton showing great puck movement and a never-give-up attitude. Congratulations to the entire team and coaching staff on a great experience.
