Capitals bring home silver medal
The Walkerton Capitals peewee LL boys are WOAA silver medalists.

The local peewees captured second place in their loop after the Blyth-Brussels Crusaders earned a 2-1 overtime win in game three on Wednesday. It was the second game in the best-of-three series to go into overtime.

Walkerton held a 1-0 lead going into the third period, with Cobi Johnson scoring the lone marker in the opening frame, assisted by Justin Bell and Dylan Reay. There were excellent scoring chances at both ends of the ice throughout the second, but neither team could capitalize on their opportunities.

The end-to-end action continued in the third, with the home team tying it up midway through the period. Walkerton successfully killed a penalty but Blyth continued to press hard, keeping the puck in the Capitals' end as the clock wound down. Solid defence from the Walkerton blueliners and huge saves by goal-tender Lucas Rowe kept the game tied. Forwards Logan Morrison, Luke Schmidt and Kobe Dautey all had good shots on net before the final buzzer.

As the 10-minute overtime period began – the second in the series – both teams were looking for the win. Less than a minute in, the Crusaders scored the game-winner and the playoff trophy.

Congratulations to the Walkerton players, coaches Jeff Osborne, Grant Wallace, Jason Brown, Doug Brandt and Mark Brandt on a terrific season. Sincere thanks to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 102 for their sponsorship.
