Novice Rep lose tough battle in Silver Stick semi-finals
 
The Walkerton Captials Novice Rep Boys team travelled to Ripley on Dec 27 and 29 to face off in the annual Silver Stick hockey tournament.
Through four games the team won two games and lost two, including a heartbreaker in the semi-finals where they lost 1-0 to the Twin Centre Stars. 
The team opened tournament play with a 3-1 loss to Mitchell. Mitchell opened the game with a quick goal at 4:39 in the first. Walkerton tried to mount a comeback in the third with a goal by Nolan Fitzsimmons, which was assisted by Landen Adams, but it wasn't enough against a tough Mitchell team. In their second game, they downed Listowel 10-1 lead by a great performance by Keenan Cartwright who found the back of the net fives times and assisted on another goal. Landon Graul scored twice and had an assist, while Nolan Fitzsimmons scored twice. Shawn Lacey also had a goal and an assist.
On Dec 29, the team took to the ice again to face Saugeen Shores which ended in a 4-2 win. Walkerton's Neil Heaney opened the scoring with a goal at 6:15 in the first, assisted by Nolan Fitzsimmons. The team went on to score three more unanswered goals, two by Shawn Lacey and another by Keenan Cartwright who also had an assist. Saugeen Shores scored twice in the third, trying to mount a comeback, but goalie Talan Hope shut the door for the win.
Later that day the boys played their hearts out in a semi-final match versus the Twin Centre Stars. The game ended in a 1-0 loss. Walkerton had scored a goal, but it was called back. Twin Centre went on to face Mitchell in the final game on Dec. 30 - Mitchell won the tournament with a 5-1 victory.
 
Nigel Hope coaches the Novice Rep Boys team, with assistant coaches Jordan Turcotte and Barry Heaney, trainer Darryl Cartwright and manager Carrie Goll. Parents and coaching staff joined in congratulating the team in a hard-fought tournament, adding the boys should be super proud of how well they did.
