Tournament Action for the Walkerton Capitals Novice Rep
The Walkerton Capitals Novice Rep team traveled to Saugeen Shores this past weekend for the Annual Chris Knott Memorial Tournament.

The Capitals took to the ice Friday afternoon to face the host team Saugeen Storm. Walkerton surprised the Storm team by coming out and keeping them off the score board through the first half of the game. Both teams saw even play through all three periods, with the only goal being scored in the second period when a Storm player got a lucky bounce off of a Walkerton defenseman. Player of the game for the Walkerton Capitals, whom was picked by the Storm coaching staff, was Ryan Hinsperger.

Saturday morning the Capitals showed hustle and great defensive play when they took on the Stirling Blues. The first two periods showed great chances and exciting plays at both ends of the Ice. The Capitals opened the scoring in the second period when one of Walkerton’s defenseman Ethan Smith made a great play to keep the puck in the Blues zone, shooting it towards the net.  Cobi Johnson took a quick wrist shot that was deflected by the Blues goalie and Jake Zettler was there to put away the rebound.  Walkerton took a 2-0 lead in the third with a goal by Lucas Bester, his third of the season. The Walkerton defensemen kept the Blues to one goal scored late in the third, and that was all they would see, Walkerton would win 2-1. Player of the game picked by the Stirling coaching staff was again goalie Ryan Hinsperger

Walkerton's second game Saturday saw the Capitals taking on NOTL from the Niagara Region, Walkerton played hard and gave NOTL their greatest challenge of the tournament. The game ended with the score of 3-0 NOTL, and Walkerton's player of the game was center Josh Dales.

The Capitals returned to The Plex Sunday morning to again take on the host team in a nail biting semi-final game. The Storm scored early in the first period, but Walkerton kept them to that for the rest of regular play. Walkerton tied up the game in the second period when Jake Zettler went to the net and sniped in his second of the tournament which sent the game into a 5 minute 4 on 4 overtime. Saugeen Storm took advantage of a Walkerton penalty in the last 2 minutes of OT and netted the winning goal. Player of the game was again Ryan Hinsperger, his third of the tournament and much deserved. Ryan made numerous saved throughout the tournament and is proving to be  a quick and confident goaltender.

The Walkerton Capitals Novice Rep players have much to be proud of coming out of this weekend’s tournament. Walkerton has showed that they are developing and learning to become a strong team.

The Capitals defense did a great job during the tournament of holding the blue line and shutting down some of the oppositions best players. Great job Scott McTeer, Dylan Cartwright, Andrew Al and Ethan Smith.

The Walkerton forwards worked hard all tournament, keeping pressure on the oppositions defense, and getting the puck up the ice.  Way to work Marlie Pegalo, Cobi Johnson, Ryan Graul, Parker Elphick, Jake Zettler, Lucas Bester, Cody McIntyre and Josh Dales.

The second half of the season is gearing up to be an exciting and successful time for the Capitals, looking forward to what it may bring and as always Go Caps Go!!!
