Pee Wee Girls Capture Bronze!
The Walkerton Godfathers’ Pizza Pee Wee Girls pulled off a thrilling overtime win to capture the Bronze Medal at their year-end tournament.

Walkerton finished in sixth place in the six team local league during the regular season.  In the first game of their year-end tournament the Pee Wee Girls tied first-place South Bruce 1-1. In their second game they lost a heartbreaker to second-place Mount Forest, 2-1. The game was decided when Mount Forest broke a 1-1 tie with 32 seconds remaining in the third period. Those two results earned Walkerton a spot in the Bronze Medal  Game against the Saugeen Shores Storm. The final game was close from start to finish. Saugeen Shores held brief leads of 1-0 and 2-1 but after both  Saugeen goals, Megan Laird was quick to pull Walkerton even with two goals of her own. Goaltender Keely Clark kept Walkerton in the game with several big saves in the third period while Sydney Baynham shadowed the Storm’s best player preventing her from scoring the winning goal . At the end of regulation time the game was tied at 2-2 and was sent to a 4-on-4 overtime.  Four minutes into the extra frame, Madison Begon’s backhander beat the Saugeen Shores goalie and gave Walkerton the victory and the Bronze Medal. Head Coach Steve Laird was thrilled for his players. He noted their steady improvement over the course of the season.  “The girls really deserved this win” said Laird. “They had some really tough losses throughout the season so it was nice to see them play so well at the end of the year and win their final game.”
