Atom Rep Girls Starting Provincial Playdowns
The Knights of Columbus Atom Rep Girls have started on their way to qualify for the provincial tournament. The team has battled hard and a very determined team has been rewarded with a pair of wins.
Before the playdowns started, Walkerton had a league game against Owen Sound. Walkerton started off fast and got five goals in the first period. Owen Sound responded and added two goals in the second period. Not to be outdone Walkerton added three more in the third period. Leading the way in the scoring department was the birthday girl herself, Brina H with a hat trick. Adding two goals were Samantha H and Stephanie Y and a single marker went to Sophie B. Helping out with assists were Jenna H with three, Justine M and Emma F and Katie S with one each. Moria R and Emily E worked their magic on defence to keep Owen Sound away from Victoria S who stood strong between the pipes. Final score 8-2 for Walkerton.
The next game was a play down game against the same Owen Sound team. Owen Sound was ready for the challenge. The Walkerton girls started off slow which was either due to the early morning game or the very snowy packed roads they had to drive through. Owen Sound was playing a great game and Walkerton could not find the back of the net as the goalie was making some great saves.
Finally, near the end of the second period, Walkerton got on the score board. The goal opened the flood gates and more goals soon followed. Brooke S lead the way with three goals and Sophie B and Samantha H added one goal each. Assists were handed out to Katie S, Bailey T and Brina H and Emma F. Great defense from Emily E, Moria R, Justine M and Jenna F to keep Owen Sound off the score board. Victoria S made great stops to always keep her team in the game. Final score was 5-0 for the Walkerton team.
Normanby was the next challenge for the girls and they knew it would be a tough battle. The Walkerton girls had the Normanby team hemmed in their end for most of the game. An outstanding Normanby goalie made numerous saves that had the girls shaking their heads and wondering how to beat her. There were many nervous fans in the stands as the game was winding down and still no score. Finally with three minutes left in the game, Stephanie Y launched the puck into the net from a pass from Samantha H and Justine M. A sense of relief fell amongst the crowd and the Walkerton girls held on for the victory. This game was a true team effort. The girls showed grit and determination and never gave up the battle. Final score 1-0 for Walkerton.
