LARSEN BANTAM GIRLS WIN LOWER LAKES CHAMPIONSHIP!!
The Walkerton Capitals Bantam Girls were victorious in the Lower Lakes Female Hockey Championship last Friday in Oshawa. 35 teams from all across Ontario compete in the Bantam B division. Only the top team in each division earns the right to compete in this tourney.

Larsens entered the playoffs with a bye as they had won the Southwest division regular season title. They then defeated Milverton in the second round and were up against South Huron Sabres in the third round, with the winner heading to Oshawa to play for the league Championship. Game one was a tight checking affair with both goalies making great saves. The final score ended as a 0-0 tie. Alyssa Inglis grabbed the shutout for the Caps. Game 2 saw Walkerton take over the visitor’s bench in Exeter. Larsens started off strong taking a commanding 3-0 lead after the first period. The Sabres would not give up and scored two of their own in the third but could not find the equalizer and the game ended 3-2 Walkerton. Scoring for Walkerton were Carlee Beitz, Joelle Busby and Kailee Liesemer. Assists went to Destiny Berberich (2), Leah Kittel, Shelby Fortney and Busby. The next day brought South Huron to the Walkerton Community Centre. This game was close as both teams skated and battled hard. Larsens managed to win the game 2-1 and take the series. Kittel scored both of the Cap goals with helpers to Busby (2) and Berberich.

Walkerton now earned the right to board a bus to Oshawa and face off against the winners of the other 3 divisions in the league to battle for the Lower Lakes Championship. The mere fact that they had qualified for the “final four” tournament was already a huge success! Game one staged the Caps against Oakville. This game was intense as both teams went for the win. Both goalies were on fire making many quality saves during the 3 periods and five minutes of OT to keep the score 0-0. A shootout would decide the winner. Walkerton decided to shoot first and Maddy Wright made no mistake deking the Oakville netminder and depositing the puck in the back of the net. This is all the Caps would need as Alyssa Inglis dominated, stopping all 3 Oakville shooters to preserve her shutout and the win. This earned the Caps a trip to the gold medal final where they met Bancroft Jets. A motivated Walkerton team perfectly executed  this match and when the final buzzer sounded the scoreboard read 3-0 Walkerton. Alyssa Inglis earned yet another great shutout. Lighting the lamp for the Caps were Busby, Kittel and Wright. Assists went to Monica Fritz, Faith Yensen, Nicole Osborne, Wright and Busby.

This championship was once again a total team effort. Team members are Maddy Wright, Faith Yensen, Destiny Berberich, Leah Kittel, Shelby Fortney, Nicole Osborne, Monica Fritz, Julie Thomson, Kailee Liesemer, Joelle Busby, Alyssa Becker, Emily Daurio, Carlee Beitz and Alyssa Inglis.

The Caps now look forward to the Provincial Championships in Mississauga this weekend. Go get ‘em Girls!!!
