Kinette Midgets bring home Silver

The Walkerton Midget BB girls travelled to Newmarket to compete in the OWHA provincial championships on the Apr.9-11th week-end and came home with a well deserved silver medal losing to Oakville 2-1 in the final. The Kinette girls started their silver medal trek facing off against the Russell Coyotes. Russell opened the scoring early in the first only to have Colleen Parks get Walkerton back on even terms with a goal @ 2:35 of the first. Alison Elphick and Becky Busby assisted. Becky put Walkerton ahead early in the second, Lesa Kittel and Elphick earned assists, only to have Russell tie it up, on a 5 on 3 powerplay, before the period ended. After killing off the rest of the penalty, the girls got back to their hard checking style and it paid off early in the third when Becky potted her second of the game to put Walkerton ahead 3-2. Parks and Elphick assisted.

The Walkerton “D” anchored by goalie Katie Grubb, held Russell at bay the rest of the way and Walkerton notched a 3-2 win.

Their second game on Friday pitted the girls against the Hamilton Hawks. The Hawks were known to have won a couple tournaments throughout the year and the Kinette girls knew they were in for a tough one. The game was scoreless going into the second period, after a fast paced first period, when Elphick put Walkerton on the score sheet with 1:31 left in the period. Becky assisted. The pace of the game remained fast and the Hamilton team began to tire and started taking lots of penalties, giving Walkerton an edge in territorial play that eventually leading to Becky putting Walkerton up 2-0 in the third. Parks earned the assist. Chantale Bourque iced the game away late in the period on a pretty pass from Parks to make the final 3-0 for Walkerton. Grubb earned the shutout

Saturday afternoon provided the time and setting for their third game of the tournament and another multiple tourney winner was waiting, the Whitby Wolves. Walkerton needed a win to ensure a trip to the playoff rounds and true to form they came out flying in this one.Whitby also needed a win to move on and were more than up to the task, thus producing a scoreless first period. Grubb, in net, took her turn to really star in this one, stopping multiple Whitby scoring chances, until Parks finally got Walkerton on the board at the mid-way point of the second. Jasmine Richardson and Becky earned the assists. Walkerton’s defense, consisting of, Richardson, Kittel, Rachael Diebold, Jocelyn King, Leticia Barber and Dallas Fahrer, did their part the rest of the way, by allowing Whitby only 3 more shots on Grubb the rest of the game thus helping Grubb earn her second straight shut-out 1-0. Walkerton’s checking line, led by center Christina Kaufman, and consisting of rotating wingers, Erin Neil, Katie Pegelo and Bridget King played their normal hard trapping, checking style to perfection and back-up goalie Emily Golem was a leader on the bench with her constant encouragement.

Walkerton placed first with three wins in their pool, thus pitting them against another tournament winner, throughout the year, in the form of the Barrie Sharks, in a quarter final match. The referees called this game close with a total of 12 penalties being called between the two teams, thus affecting the flow of the game, but Bourque finally broke through, giving Walkerton a 1-0 lead, powering a hard shot through a very good Barrie goalie. Lauren Smith and Kittel collected assists. This goal energized the Kinette girls and seemed to deflate the Barrie girls and true to form, Parks took advantage of this scoring a beautiful unassisted, shorthanded goal to make it 2-0. Her fourth goal of the week-end, with two minutes left in the game salted the game away for Walkerton 3-0. Jocelyn King earned the assist on this one and Grubb recorded her third straight shut-out.

This win moved Walkerton into the semi-finals Sunday morning against Timmins, who were also undefeated for the week-end. Another fast start caught Timmins flat footed and the girls were rewarded at the midway point of the period when Shae Busby scored during a goal mouth scrabble. Bourque earned the assist. A faceoff two shifts later in the Timmins end would prove to be the turning point of the game when Diebold notched her first of the SEASON on a shot that had eyes as her point shot found the  bottom corner, making it 2-0 for Walkerton. Becky Busby with her 7th point of the tournament earned the assist. Bourque put the finishing touches on another Grubb shutout scoring early in the second. Shae and Jocelyn King assisted and Walkerton cruised the rest of the way to a 3-0 win.

Now all that stood between Walkerton and a gold medal was a very strong Oakville team. Again another tournament winner as well as the Lower Lakes Female Hockey League champion. This time it was the oppositions turn to get off to a fast start, when Oakville scored a goal only 50 seconds into the game on a fluke play which consisted of a centering pass from behind the Walkerton net which deflected off a foot and past a startled Grubb, who had no chance on this one. True to form, Walkerton came back strong and went toe to toe with Oakville and entered the third period still down a goal. Oakville then upped their lead to 2-0 half way through the third but the never say die Kinette’s came back with their captain, Colleen Parks scoring from her stomach, unassisted, with Grubb on the bench for an extra attacker. Walkerton had 70 seconds left and took the next faceoff right into the Oakville zone. The team threw everything at the Oakville goalie but she was up to the challenge and earned Oakville a well deserved 2-1 win and the gold. “ Five more minutes and we would have had them” is a famous saying the coaches have heard uttered often and in this case it might have come true as Walkerton really had Oakville on their heels at the end of the game. These girls left nothing on the ice and received a well deserved ovation  from the fans when they received their silver medals.

The Walkerton Midget BB girls ended their season 27-16-3, which isn’t very flattering, but in six tournaments this year they won three, including the International Silverstick and the WOAA  Intermediate championship and came in second in the other three which includes the Silver here. Congrats girls, it was a great ride.
