The Walkerton Kinette Midget BB girls lost to local rival, Tiverton in a Shoot-out,which took 15 shooters!! , 3-2
The Walkerton Kinette Midget girls participated in
the Woodstock Tournament on the weekend of Jan 8, 9, and 10th.
In game one, on Friday afternoon, the girls faced
off against the Zorra Fusion. In the first period of play neither team could
score dispite end to end action. In the second period Walkerton entered the
score board with the first goal scored by Colleen Parks, assists going to Alison
Elphick and Lesa Kittel. Chantale Bourque added to the lead with her goal
assisted by Shae Busby and Lauren Smith. Walkerton ended the second period with
a 2-0 lead.
In the third period of action, Zorra scored a
goal of their own with only 3:36 left on the clock. Chantale Bourque answered
this with her second of the game 15 seconds later assisted by Shae Busby and
Leticia Barber, ending the game in a 3-1 win for Walkerton. Katie Grubb stood
stong in net for Walkerton.
In game two on Friday night the girls met up with
Belmont for an exciting game. In the first period of play Walkerton scored with
a goal by Becky Busby, assisted by Kittel. Erin Neil followed up with Wakerton's
second goal assisted by Becky Busby, giving Walkerton a 2 goal lead in the first
period. The second period of action saw no scoring on either end. In the 3rd,
Belmont entered the scored board, with 8:30 on the clock on a power play making
it 2-1. Bourque answered with an unassisted goal less than a minute later to
widen the gap to a 3-1 lead for Walkerton. With just over three minutes
remaining Belmont scored the games final goal on another power play making it a
3-2 final score. Emily Golem played in net for Walkerton.
On Saturday afternoon the girls met up with
Tiverton for game 3. Neither team scored in the first or second period. In the
third period of play, Lauren Smith scored for Walkerton assisted by Jocelyn King
and Shae Busby, to give Walkerton a 1-0 lead. Bourque added to the lead with an
empty net goal from Jasmine Richarson and Christina Kaufman. Katie Grubb earned
the shutout for Walkerton. This assured the girls a spot in the
finals.
Game 4 was played Saturday night against Lucan, where they saw their first loss of the tournament. In the first
period Walkerton began the scoring with a goal by Colleen Parks, assisted by
Becky Busby. Lucan answered this with a goal of their own ending the first
period in a 1-1 tie. The second period saw no scoring. In the third period Lucan
put three more goals past goaltender Emily Golem, giving Lucan a
4-1 win.
In the finals Walkerton once again faced of
against Tiverton. Tiverton started the scoring in the first period. Becky
Busby tied it up with a goal assisted by Elphick and Parks ending the first
period in a 1-1 tie. In the second period Walkerton took the lead with a goal by
Neil, assisted by Kaufman and Dallas Fahrer. Walkerton led the game 2-1. In the
third period, with only 33 second left on the clock Tiverton scored a short
handed goal to tie up the game, sending it into a shoot out. Tiverton managed to
sneak one past Walkerton's goaltender Katie Grubb, after 15 shooters, giving
Tiverton a 3-2 win, and sending Walkerton home with the silver.
