Godfathers Peewee Girls WOAA Champions!!!
Written by Shannon Busby

The Walkerton Peewee Rep girls finished out the season in high style.

    The girls captured the WOAA title this past weekend in tournament play in Port Elgin. Walkerton was up against their toughest rival from Kincardine in game 1. Walkerton appeared tired for the 8 AM game as Kincardine took advantage, scoring twice in the second period. Leah Kittel provided some hope for the Caps as she scored an unassisted goal in the 3rd period. The Caps could not muster enough force to tie the game.
    Game 2 saw the Caps dominate the squad from Owen Sound. Keeper Madison Elliott allowed only one goal while her team tallied 9 goals spread throughout the three periods. Birthday girl Emily Cormack, Julie Thomson and Joelle Busby were all able to pot 2 goals a piece. Single markers were recorded by Melynda McKenzie, Jasmine Thompson and Kittel. Assists were obtained by McKenzie(2), Cormack(2), Ashley Ernst, Julie Thomson and Jasmine Thompson.
The next competitor for the Caps was a well disciplined, skilled team from Markdale. This was a very close contest on the scoreboard only, that ended in a 2-2 tie. The Walkerton gals pelted the opposing goalie with shots but were only able to reach the twine twice. Madison Wright fired a shot from near the blue line that was unstoppable. Soon after, Jasmine Thompson who was positioned in the slot, buried the puck off a feed from Busby.
    The round robin results landed the Godfathers crew in the championship game. The Caps were pumped for a win when it counted against the Kincardine Flyers! The match was close, with end to end combat. Kincardine was first to mark the scoreboard with a goal in the second period. Within minutes, the Caps took the wind out of their sails as Busby found the top corner on a cycle play from linemates Ernst and Julie Thomson. Now tied, the girls showed true team play, as they minimized the shots on goal from some of the strong shooting Flyers. With just under 4  minutes on the clock, Julie Thomson sent a beautiful pass to Ernst as she chipped in the game winner. Madison Elliott made key saves to preserve the win and bragging rights to the WOAA title. Although not on the scoresheet, Monica Fritz and Natalie Hawkins were strong and determined on the blueline throughout the tourney.
    This squad has accumulated some impressive hardware throughout the season. Highlights include;
International Silverstick Champions
WOAA Champions
Gold Medallists at Cambridge Roadrunners Tournament
Silver Medallists at Barrie Sharks Tournament
