International Silver Stick Champs
The Godfather Peewee B Girls travelled to Sarnia this past weekend and came home International Silver Stick Champions.
Play began on Friday afternoon as Godfathers took on Oakville and in a tightly contested game in which Godfathers had many scoring opportunities it took till part way through the 3rd period before Des Berberich scored the only goal of the contest and that is all the scoring that was needed as they won 1-0.Game two had the girls facing Tillsonburg Sat morning and they came out flying.The girls took it to Tillsonburg at both ends of the rink and skated away with a 5-0 victory.Goal scores were Leah,Sarah(2),Joelle and Em Haight.Assists were earned by Leah(2),Joelle(2),Niki,Melynda,Lindsay and Em Daurio.Game three had the girls facing the hometown Sarnia Sting.Two minutes the Godfather girls opend the scoring on a goal by Des from Sarah and Em.In the second Joelle popped in another from Nik and Leah.50 seconds later Em Haight got the third on from Des and in the third period Lindsay rounded out the scoring unassisted and they finished with a 4-0 victory.With this victory the girls finished first in Pool A and would play the second place team from Pool B. This turned out to be Clairington.After a scoreless First period Des got one by the Clairington goalie part way through the second from Em H and Sarah.At the end of the second it was 1-1.Three and half minutes into the third Des scored the game winner from Em H and Maddy.With a minute and change left in the game Em H finished it off from Sarah and Des.This propelled the girls into the finals to face Kincardine who had also run the table in Pool B.With both teams pumped and a buzz in the stands everybody knew this would be a tightly contested game.With lots of support from the parents,the Midget girls and the girls from Mt Forest our girls were ready for the test.One minute and one second into the game Em Haight scored what turned out to be the game winner from Sarah and Leah.The whole game went back and fourth with Kincardine having a great deal of pressure on the Godfather girls at times.Walkerton's goaltender Alyssa Inglis played awesome and not only in this game but every game on the weekend.The defensive pairings of Lindasy and Melynda and Maddy and Em Daurio played solid hockey in takin care of business in their own end.The forwards Niki,Des,Em,Nellie,Sarah,Joelle and Leah you could not say enough of the effort they put in.Hockey is a team game and these young ladies are a great example of that.Parents we can thank you enough for your support and enthuisam it is greatly appreciated.Girls we are really proud of you and would like to wish you all the best in your playdown.Remember what heart means to this team.
