Saturday, January 31st, it was the Walkerton Wightman Atom Girls taking on Durham at the Walkerton Arena. The Wightman girls meant business this game more than ever.
Justine played great offense, positioning herself adeptly to receive passes, passing up the ice to her teammates, and took several serious shots on net. Ashlyn worked her tail off to keep the puck in Durham's end and shut down the Durham offense. Ally, backing away from no one, took several shots on net, did some savvy passing out in front of the net and used the boards like an expert to advance the puck down the ice. Moira saw that the puck stayed in Durham's end no matter what it took. Sophie stood her ground at defense, making plays for Walkerton and breaking up Durham's plays.
Dana, putting herself in scoring position repeatedly, taking several shots. Sam, with a skillful pass from Courtney, cashed in on a breakaway in the first period for the first goal of the game. Courtney, skating hard and lifting the puck, scored unassisted in the second period.
Brooklyn, digging like crazy for the whole game, had the puck lots and took numerous shots on goal, and came through to assist in the third goal. Krista, after digging in the corners, brought her hard work to fruition in the third period when, assisted by Brooklyn and Sophie, sent the puck flying past the Durham goalie.
Pippi, ever the ace on defense, chalked up a shut-out.
The girls finished with a 3-0 victory and the satisfaction of knowing that they left it all out on the ice today. Great efforts by all the girls -- the fans had lots to cheer about today!
