Wightman Atom Cannot be defeated by Wallace

If ever there was a team with heart, it's the Walkerton Wightman Atoms.

If ever there was a team with heart, it's the Walkerton Wightman Atoms.

Monday night, January 26, they skated their way to a tie when they faced the Wallace Atom Girls in Kurtzville.

Wallace was held to a mere one goal by strong defense served up by the Walkerton squad.  Moira did her part to keep the puck away from the mesh, robbing Wallace of a goal to the delight of Walkerton fans.  Sophie pitched in to keep the puck out of our end, fending off more than one Wallace breakaway.  Vicki came out play, as evidenced by her constant hustling.  Jessica chased down the opposition, used the boards well, and even attempted a great shot from the blue line.

Ally, playing both offense and defence was not afraid to put herself in the puck's way; she had a breakaway which was only saved by the heroic efforts of the Wallace goalie.  Courtney, outskating the opposition, stole the puck several times and broke up a number of Wallace plays.  Justine, always ready for a pass, held her position and was always at the right place at the right time.  Brooklyn did not disappoint the fans, digging in with her usual spunk.  Dana, always ready to play, showed us her persistence by fighting hard for the puck the whole game.  Ashlyn did her part to help on a breakaway and never gave up her fight for the puck.

Samantha almost scored with a long shot from the blue line, and later, with an assist by Courtney, wrapped one around the pipes to give Walkerton our only goal.

It's no surprise that Pippi, in fine form again, stopped several breakaways and shut down many intense shots.  The game ended in a 1-1 draw.

These Wightman girls proved once more how they play with heart.  Stay tuned for the results of Saturday morning's game where they go head to head with Durham.
