On Saturday, January 24, the Walkerton Arena was the venue for the Wightman Atom Houseleague Girls to take on the Wiarton Atom Girls.
Wiarton took one goal early on in the game and two more in the first period. It was a fast-paced game
with our girls showing their usual hockey prowess. Pippi wowed us, stretching in to the corners to keep the net empty. On defense, Vicki was no stranger to digging, particularly in the corners, Jessica was relentless at guarding our net, keeping the puck out of our end. Ally tried her hand at defense, showing her spirit, stepping in to break up numerous plays. Krista also played some defense, a first for her, and displayed her versatility, putting a stop to several Wiarton coups. Sophie guarded the net and sent the puck out to Wiarton's end a number of times.
Out in front, Sam shone as she tore down the ice on a breakaway ending in her shot and a save by the Wiarton goalie. Dana displayed the awesome skating that we see in each game and Justine was reliable at holding her point, ready for a pass which almost yielded a breakaway. Brooklyn demonstrated yet again how she comes out to play, digging and making plays and aggressive offense was the usual delivery from Bailey.
Courtney, in her customary fearless fashion, put the Wightman Atoms on the board early in the third period when, assisted by Sam, she popped one in from close proximity to the Wiarton net.
After a little success for Wiarton at our net, they ended up victorious over Walkerton. But the Wightman girls will bring it again next game as they meet the Wallace Atoms in Kurtzville on Monday night at 6.
