K of C Atoms Consulation Champs!!
Written by Shannon Busby
Walkerton Knights of Columbus atom girls had a successfull year end tournament on the weekend of March 15th and 16th.

Ayton hosted all 18 teams for this WOAA playoff tournament. Walkerton placed third with the consulation win.
The first game saw Walkerton face Kincardine whom had placed first overall in regular season play. The game was very tense as both teams were evenly matched. Finally in the second period, Kincardine was able to snap a shot past goalie Charlene Sullivan. With only minutes remaining in the third period Walkerton pulled their goalie to try and send the game into overtime. Unfortunately Kincardine scored an empty netter to seal the win. The Knights all gave a great effort in this close game.
The next game had the girls out of bed early to face Mildmay at 8AM on Saturday morning.  Jenah VanLoon was first to score with passes from Arianne Beglaw and Leah Kittel. In the second period Jasmine Thompson scored one of her own with assistance from Kittel and Madison Elliott. In the third Joelle Busby deked out the goalie on a breakaway to make it 3-0 Walkerton. Seconds after Busby was tripped on another breakaway and was awarded a penalty shot. Once again she was able to deke the goalie but this time hit the post. The defensive team of Elliott, Melynda McKenzie, Natalie Hawkins and Monica Fritz were solid in allowing only three shots on netminder Sullivan who earned the shutout.
The win earned Walkerton a berth in the Consulation final versus Owen Sound who had defeated the Knights just a couple of weeks earlier. This time Walkerton was hungry for the win. Busby set the tone as she blasted away from the opening faceoff, carrying the puck into the Owen Sound end and firing the first goal of the game with only 8 seconds off the clock. Owen Sound later replied to even it at 1. Busby was able to tap in her second goal on a perfect pass from linemate Ashley Ernst. Kittel then scored 2 goals with help from Emily Cormack and McKenzie. Jenna Haight's hard work allowed many close scoring chances as well but she was unable to put one on the board. Beglaw was able to chip in a great goal with passes from VanLoon and Busby. Walkerton then took a commanding 6-1 lead on a nice deke by Kittel. Owen Sound fought hard till the end scoring 2 more goals in the last minutes of the third, but Walkerton prevailed winning 6-3. MVP of the game was awarded to Kittel. All of the girls received medals and the consulation trophy.
Busby and Kittel will represent the K of C girls in the WOAA all star game to be played on March 29th at 1:30PM in Tara.
