Atom aged hockey players and their families spent time on Saturday, January 12 enjoying the hospitality of the Walkerton area. Walkerton’s Cuneos Local League Atoms hosted an extremely successful tournament that featured teams from Seaforth, Shallow Lake, Fergus, Mount Brydges, Minto, and two teams from Saugeen Shores.
Walkerton’s Cuneos Atoms were a stand out team making it all the way to the finals, but all of the teams were strong contenders providing exciting end to end action in every game.
After struggling in their first game Seaforth roared back to win the Consolation B side championship defeating Saugeen Shores # 1 in a close fought game.
On the A side Walkerton met a very strong Mount Brydges team in the final. Walkerton scored impressive wins over both of the Saugeen Shores teams on the way to the championship game. Mount Brydges defeated the Seaforth team and then managed to squeak out a win over a tough team from Fergus.
Before the championship games a skills competition took place along with a fun raffle for great prizes thanks to the sponsorship of Dr. Papaioannou, Joy Source for Sports, Browns Guardian Pharmacy, Pellow Pharmasave, Home Hardware, Hydro One, Municipality of Brockton, Subway, Eveready, Cuneos and the Owen Sound Attack. While no Walkerton players won one of the skills competitions they were strong contenders and their presence was felt by the other competitors.
The final game was a strong one for Walkerton, but they just were not able to hold back the Mount Brydges attack after competing in both the first and last games of the day. With fresher legs the strong team from Mount Brydges was able to push by Cuneos 4-1.
There were too many stand out performances by Cuneos players to focus on just one. The whole day was a great effort by each and every one of them. A special thanks to all the parent volunteers who made this such a great day for all the players, coaches and parents from every community.
